Samsung May Replace Gemini with Perplexity AI in Galaxy S26

According to Bloomberg sources, Samsung is negotiating a major partnership with AI search company Perplexity that could redefine artificial intelligence capabilities in the upcoming Galaxy S26 series. This potential shift marks a significant departure from Samsung's previous reliance on Google's Gemini technology.

Samsung's Strategic AI Pivot

The tech giant had been an early adopter of Google's Gemini AI, which largely replaced Samsung's own Bixby assistant. The new discussions suggest Samsung is pursuing a more diversified AI strategy. Unlike conventional chatbots, Perplexity specializes in AI-powered search with a unique feature: it cites web sources when providing answers, offering users more transparent and verifiable information.

Under the proposed agreement, Perplexity would be deeply embedded in the Galaxy S26's core functions, including its web browser and Bixby assistant. More significantly, Perplexity might become the default AI assistant - a crucial advantage given most users never change default settings.

This potential collaboration emerges as Google contends with antitrust challenges. During recent legal proceedings, Perplexity CEO Dmitry Shevelenko revealed Google had blocked Motorola from using their technology in 2024 models. However, Perplexity later secured placement in Motorola's 2025 Razr phone after Google lost its antitrust case and relaxed partnership restrictions.

The regulatory shift has created openings for alternative AI providers in the mobile market. Samsung's exploration of Perplexity represents one of the most significant responses to this changing landscape.

Beyond Motorola's Implementation

While Motorola has already incorporated Perplexity into its Moto AI system, Samsung's integration would be far more comprehensive. Reports indicate representatives from both companies met in South Korea and reached preliminary agreements, though final terms remain under negotiation. Motorola's latest Razr demonstrates the potential pitfalls - integrating AI from Meta, Microsoft, Perplexity, and Google created a confusing user experience rather than seamless intelligence.
