ChatGPT Launches Instant Checkout for Seamless E-commerce

ChatGPT Introduces Instant Checkout Feature

OpenAI has unveiled a groundbreaking Instant Checkout feature for ChatGPT, allowing users to complete purchases directly within the chat interface. This innovation eliminates the need for browser redirects, streamlining the shopping experience for millions of users.

How Instant Checkout Works

The feature is powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, a collaboration between OpenAI and payment giant Stripe. This open standard ensures secure, simple transactions with support for multiple payment methods, including Apple Pay, Google Pay, and credit cards.

Currently available only in the US, the feature supports single-item purchases across free, Plus, and Pro ChatGPT plans. Future updates will include multi-item carts and international expansion.

Merchant Integration and Support

The initial rollout partners with Etsy sellers in the US, with plans to integrate over a million Shopify merchants—including major brands like Glossier and SKIMS—in coming months. Merchants can enable the feature with minimal setup if they already use Stripe for payments.

OpenAI emphasizes that product recommendations are based on relevance, availability, price, and quality—not paid promotions. Both Etsy and Shopify have endorsed the feature as a gateway to "seamless commerce."

Industry Impact

The open-sourced Agentic Commerce Protocol could transform not just e-commerce but also service subscriptions and virtual goods transactions. By leveraging Stripe's infrastructure while remaining platform-agnostic, OpenAI aims to accelerate adoption across industries.

Key Points:

  • One-click purchases within ChatGPT interface
  • US-only launch with single-item support initially
  • Powered by Stripe-backed Agentic Commerce Protocol
  • Coming soon to Shopify merchants
  • Protocol open-sourced to drive industry innovation
