Broadcom Bets Big on AI Chips: $100 Billion Revenue Goal by 2027
Broadcom's AI Chip Ambitions Reach New Heights
Broadcom CEO Hock Tan didn't mince words during Wednesday's earnings call. "We're just getting started," he declared while outlining an aggressive roadmap that would see the company's AI chip business generate over $100 billion annually by 2027. Investors clearly liked what they heard - shares jumped more than 5% in after-hours trading.
Custom Chips Fuel Growth Surge
The semiconductor giant reported stellar first-quarter results, with AI-related revenue doubling year-over-year to $8.4 billion. This performance accounted for nearly half of Broadcom's total sales, which climbed 29% to $19.3 billion. For the current quarter, executives project AI semiconductor revenue will climb further to $10.2 billion.
Tan attributes this explosive growth to what he calls "the next phase" of customized AI deployment. "Our ASIC solutions are becoming indispensable," he explained, referencing the company's application-specific integrated circuits designed for major tech players.
Tech Giants Drive Demand
Broadcom has secured commitments from some of tech's biggest names:
- Google (3 GW capacity)
- Anthropic (3 GW)
- Meta (minimum 2 GW)
- OpenAI (1 GW)
While acknowledging that revenue per gigawatt can vary, Tan expressed confidence in Broadcom's ability to meet these ambitious targets thanks to locked-in supply chain agreements.
"When your customers include nearly every major player in generative AI," remarked industry analyst Sarah Chen of TechInsights, "you're not just selling chips - you're building critical infrastructure."
Beyond Just Silicon
While chips currently lead Broadcom's AI charge, analysts note the company boasts a diversified portfolio including:
- Digital signal processors
- Data processing units
- Network switches
This breadth positions Broadcom as more than just a component supplier - it's becoming a foundational technology partner as companies increasingly develop their own custom silicon solutions.
The road ahead won't be without challenges though. As Chen cautions: "Maintaining this growth trajectory requires flawless execution and continued innovation cycles that match customer roadmaps."
