UK Workers Grapple With AI Job Fears As Automation Spreads

UK Workforce Faces AI Anxiety as Automation Advances

The rapid march of artificial intelligence is fueling real concerns in British workplaces. According to Randstad's latest annual survey, over a quarter of UK employees (27%) now fear their jobs could vanish within five years due to AI automation.

The Employer-Employee Disconnect

While 66% of British companies boosted AI investments last year, and 56% of workers report their employers pushing AI tools, nearly half (45%) believe this technological shift primarily benefits corporations rather than staff. "There's a clear perception gap," notes HR expert Sarah Wilkins. "Management sees efficiency gains while employees see replacement risks."

Generational Divide in Tech Anxiety

The survey uncovered striking age-based differences:

  • Gen Z workers show deepest concerns about automation threatening junior positions
  • Baby Boomers, nearing retirement, express relative calm about AI impacts

"Younger employees rightly worry about getting squeezed out," explains Wilkins. "Entry-level roles are often the first automated."

The report highlights several workforce shifts already underway:

  • Routine, low-complexity jobs seeing earliest AI integration
  • Surge in "AI Agent" specialist roles (up 16x last year)
  • Growing demand for human-AI collaboration skills

Randstad CEO Sander van 't Noordende emphasizes: "AI shouldn't be viewed as workforce competition but as productivity enhancement. However, companies must address employee concerns or risk deepening career anxieties."

The findings suggest UK businesses face twin challenges: harnessing AI's potential while maintaining workforce confidence during turbulent technological change.

Key Points:

  • 27% of UK workers fear job loss to AI within 5 years
  • 45% believe companies benefit more than employees from AI adoption
  • Gen Z shows strongest anxiety about automation impacts
  • "AI Agent" job postings increased 16-fold last year
