Runlayer Secures $11M Seed Funding to Revolutionize MCP Security

Cybersecurity Startup Runlayer Lands Major Funding

In a significant boost for enterprise security solutions, MCP-focused startup Runlayer announced today it has raised $11 million in seed funding. The round was led by prominent venture firms Khosla Ventures and Felicis, signaling strong investor confidence in this emerging cybersecurity player.

Serial Entrepreneur Behind the Vision

The company is spearheaded by Andrew Berman, a seasoned founder whose previous ventures include Nanit and Vowel. Berman brings unique credentials to the table - he previously led AI initiatives at Zapier and helped build early MCP servers. "We saw firsthand how rapid MCP adoption was creating security gaps," Berman explained during our interview.

What started as frustration turned into opportunity when Berman teamed up with two former Zapier colleagues last August. In just four months, they transformed their vision into a working product that's already serving eight unicorn or publicly traded companies.

Solving the MCP Security Puzzle

Runlayer's platform addresses multiple pain points simultaneously:

  • Integrated Security: Combines gateways, threat detection, and observability
  • Enterprise-Ready: Automatically maps proxy permissions to existing identity policies
  • Compliance Simplified: Provides real-time risk scoring and retains comprehensive audit logs

The "human and machine equality" approach particularly resonates with IT teams struggling to manage complex permissions across growing MCP deployments.

Notable Early Traction

The startup isn't just making promises - it's delivering results:

  • Signed major clients including Gusto, dbt Labs, Instacart, and Opendoor
  • Attracted David Soria Parra (main author of MCP standard) as advisor
  • Plans GA launch later this year with on-premise deployment options

The company aims ambitious targets - covering over 1 million enterprise MCP traffic endpoints by 2026 through its subscription-based model.

Key Points:

  • $11M Seed Round: Led by Khosla Ventures and Felicis
  • Serial Founder: Andrew Berman brings AI and MCP expertise from Zapier
  • All-in-One Solution: Integrates multiple security functions into single console
  • Enterprise Focus: Designed for large-scale deployments with compliance needs
  • Rapid Traction: Already serving eight major clients after four months
