Meta Bets Big on Wearable AI with Limitless Acquisition

In a strategic move to bolster its smart hardware capabilities, Meta has acquired Limitless, the San Francisco-based startup behind innovative AI-powered wearable technology. The deal, announced this week, gives Meta access to Limitless's voice interaction expertise and its talented engineering team.

What Limitless Brings to Meta

The startup made waves with its discreet smart pendant that records conversations, transcribes speech in real-time, and offers voice-activated search functions. Backed by prominent investors including Andreessen Horowitz and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Limitless developed technology specifically designed to enhance human memory and focus.

"When we started five years ago, many thought combining AI with hardware was science fiction," recalled Dan Siroker, Limitless CEO. "Now it's clear this is where technology is heading."

Shifting Priorities at Meta

The acquisition follows several strategic moves by Meta signaling increased focus on AI hardware:

  • Appointment of former Apple designer Alan Dye to lead Reality Labs' design team
  • Reallocation of resources from metaverse projects to wearable tech development
  • Growing investment in personal assistant technologies

While the deal's financial details remain confidential, industry analysts note Limitless was valued at $367 million during its last funding round in 2023.

Product Transition Plans

Following the acquisition:

  • Existing Pendant devices will receive at least one year of continued support The compact, screen-free wearable maintains Wi-Fi/Bluetooth connectivity The product line will eventually be phased out as teams integrate technologies

The Pendant gained attention for its ability to analyze daily activities and provide personalized suggestions—technology that could potentially enhance future Meta products.
