Imitation Game: DeepSeek Knockoffs Face Fines

Beijing Aolan De Information Technology and Hangzhou Bo Heng Cultural Media both got slapped with fines for promoting a "DeepSeek Local Deployment Tool" using branding suspiciously similar to the authentic DeepSeek platform.
Regulators didn't mince words - these weren't innocent similarities but deliberate attempts to confuse users. The penalties? 5,000 yuan ($700) and 30,000 yuan ($4,200) respectively. ChatGPT Pretenders Get Schooled
In perhaps the most brazen case, Shanghai Qiyun Network Technology tried passing off OpenAI's API as its own "Chinese version of ChatGPT." Their public account "ChatGPT Online" featured branding nearly identical to the real deal while offering what amounted to little more than a wrapper around OpenAI's technology.
The regulator wasn't fooled - they hit Qiyun with a 62,000 yuan ($8,700) fine for creating "deliberate confusion." This case underscores growing concerns about Chinese firms repackaging foreign AI innovations as domestic products.
Algorithm Heist Nets Record Fine
The most severe penalty went to Min Zhong, an engineer caught red-handed stealing nearly 16GB of proprietary algorithms and big data code from his employer. Hangzhou authorities didn't pull punches - they levied a whopping 360,000 yuan ($50,600) fine under China's Anti-Unfair Competition Law.
