AI Video Crackdown Wraps Up: Major Platforms Remove Thousands of Manipulated Clips
Major Platforms Remove AI-Manipulated Videos Following Government Campaign
The State Administration of Radio, Film and Television has wrapped up its month-long crackdown on videos altered by artificial intelligence. The campaign specifically targeted content that distorted China's cultural heritage, including manipulated footage of historical figures and scenes from classical literature.
Cleanup Results Show Widespread Compliance
As the January 1 deadline passed, leading platforms reported their cleanup figures:
- TikTok led with 6,713 removals
- Kuaishou followed closely with 5,576 videos taken down
- WeChat eliminated 4,376 problematic clips
- Other platforms including Bilibili (3,400+), Xiaohongshu (1,394), Baidu (903), and Weibo (420+) also reported significant removals
The targeted content primarily involved inappropriate modifications to depictions from China's Four Great Classical Novels and portrayals of revolutionary heroes.
From Temporary Campaign to Ongoing Oversight
While the intensive month-long effort has concluded, regulators made clear this isn't the end of scrutiny. "Platforms must incorporate this monitoring into their daily operations," stated administration officials. The move aims to maintain authenticity in online video while preventing AI technology from being used to rewrite history or disrespect cultural icons.
The policy affects all major Chinese internet companies:
- Beijing Douyin Technology Co., Ltd. (TikTok)
- Beijing Kuaishou Technology Co., Ltd.
- Shenzhen Tencent Computer Systems Co., Ltd. (WeChat)
- Shanghai Kuangyu Digital Technology Co., Ltd. (Bilibili)
- Yinglin Information Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. (Xiaohongshu)
The initiative reflects growing global concerns about AI's potential misuse in media manipulation while balancing technological innovation with cultural preservation.
Key Points:
- Over 20,000 AI-modified videos removed nationwide
- Focus on protecting classical literature and historical accuracy
- Temporary campaign transitions to permanent monitoring
- All major Chinese video platforms participated
