Altman Launches Brain-Computer Startup to Rival Neuralink

Altman Co-founds Brain-Computer Interface Startup Challenging Neuralink

Sam Altman is preparing to launch Merge Labs, a new brain-computer interface (BCI) startup that will directly compete with Elon Musk's Neuralink, according to a Financial Times report. The company is currently raising funds with an estimated valuation of $850 million, with OpenAI's venture capital team expected to be the primary backer.

The Merge Labs Initiative

Merge Labs is being co-founded with Alex Blania, head of Altman's digital identity project Tools for Humanity, which specializes in eye-scanning authentication technology. The startup represents Altman's latest push into neurotechnology following his longstanding interest in human-machine integration.

The venture enters a market dominated by Musk's Neuralink, founded in 2016. Neuralink has made significant strides in developing implantable brain chips, recently completing a $600 million Series E round that valued the company at $9 billion. Its technology currently focuses on helping paralyzed patients control devices through thought.

The Singularity Vision

Both companies aim to fundamentally transform human-technology interaction, with some speculating their work could accelerate the arrival of the "Singularity"—the theoretical point when artificial intelligence surpasses human intelligence or when humans merge with technology.

Altman first referenced this concept in a 2017 blog post: "Although merging has already begun, it will become even stranger in the future. We will be the first species to design our own descendants."

Growing Tensions Between Tech Titans

The Merge Labs launch comes amid escalating public disputes between Altman and Musk. The former business partners (Musk was an OpenAI co-founder before leaving in 2018) recently clashed on social media platform X, with Altman accusing Musk of controlling the platform and Musk calling Altman a "liar."

What's Next for Merge Labs?

While details remain scarce as negotiations continue, industry observers note this move signals Altman's determination not to cede neurotechnology leadership to Musk. OpenAI declined to comment on its potential involvement in funding Merge Labs.

The BCI market is poised for significant growth as these competing visions of human-machine integration develop. Both Neuralink and Merge Labs could play pivotal roles in shaping how humanity interacts with advanced AI systems in coming decades.

Key Points:

  • 🚀 Sam Altman co-founding Merge Labs, a $850M-valued BCI startup
  • ⚔️ Direct competition with Elon Musk's Neuralink ($9B valuation)
  • 🧠 Both companies working toward human-machine integration and potential "Singularity"
  • 💢 Growing public tensions between the two tech leaders
  • 🔮 Potential to redefine how humans interact with technology
