India's AI Boom: ChatGPT Hits 100 Million Weekly Users
India Emerges as AI Powerhouse with 100 Million ChatGPT Users
At the eve of India's high-profile AI summit, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman dropped a bombshell: India now boasts 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, cementing its position as the platform's second-largest market worldwide after the United States.
Student-Driven Growth
OpenAI's strategic moves in India are paying off. After establishing a New Delhi office last August, the company introduced "ChatGPT Go" - a budget-friendly version that came with a free one-year subscription for local users. This student-focused approach has proven particularly successful, making India home to ChatGPT's largest young user base globally.

But OpenAI isn't alone in this race. Google plans to counter with free AI Pro subscriptions for Indian students starting this September. "India represents our most engaged market for Gemini learning tools," confirmed Google VP Chris Phillips.
The Monetization Challenge
While user numbers impress, turning this success into revenue presents hurdles. Altman acknowledges that India's price sensitivity and infrastructure limitations make commercialization trickier than in Western markets.
The Indian government is responding through its "India AI Mission," accelerating computing power expansion and startup support. Altman warns of potential inequality if AI access isn't democratized: "We're working closely with Indian authorities to ensure benefits reach everyone," he noted, hinting at upcoming partnerships.
Global Spotlight on New Delhi
The five-day India AI Impact Summit has become a who's who of tech leadership. Alongside Altman, attendees include Anthropic's Dario Amodei, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, and business magnate Mukesh Ambani. With delegations from France, UAE and Brazil also present, the event underscores India's growing clout in shaping global AI policy.
As competition heats up and infrastructure improves, one thing is clear: India's AI revolution is just beginning.
