Dubai Welcomes Baidu's Driverless Future with Historic Apollo Go Launch

Baidu Accelerates Autonomous Driving Dreams in Dubai

Dubai's streets just got smarter. On January 6, Baidu's Apollo Go became the first - and currently only - autonomous vehicle platform authorized for fully driverless testing in the Middle Eastern metropolis. The landmark approval from Dubai's Road and Transport Authority (RTA) signals a major leap forward for both the Chinese tech company and the region's smart city ambitions.

A Smart Hub Takes Root

Alongside this regulatory breakthrough, Baidu unveiled its first overseas "fully autonomous integrated operation base" in Dubai. This cutting-edge facility serves as mission control for the company's Middle Eastern fleet, handling everything from daily vehicle operations to safety protocols and technician training.

"This isn't just about putting cars on roads," explains Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Director General who witnessed the inaugural test drive. "It represents a fundamental shift in how we envision urban mobility." The official praised Apollo Go's rapid progress since their March 2025 partnership agreement - from securing Dubai's first autonomous test license to this latest driverless milestone.

Scaling Up Smart Mobility

The numbers tell an impressive story:

  • 22 cities worldwide now host Apollo Go services
  • 17 million+ rides completed to date
  • 250,000 weekly fully autonomous trips globally
  • 240 million kilometers logged across all operations

Dubai plans to quickly scale its fleet beyond 1,000 vehicles, positioning itself as Baidu's Middle Eastern showcase for autonomous transportation innovation.

Key Points:

  • Historic First: Apollo Go secures Dubai/Middle East pioneer status for driverless testing
  • Strategic Hub: New operations base supports large-scale autonomous fleet management
  • Rapid Expansion: Marks latest achievement in Baidu's aggressive global autonomous driving rollout
  • Smart City Synergy: Aligns with Dubai's vision for cutting-edge urban transportation solutions
