Chinese AI Models Dominate Global Rankings for Fifth Straight Week

China's AI Leadership Extends With Record Model Usage

New data reveals Chinese artificial intelligence models continue their global dominance, processing nearly twice as many queries as their closest competitors. The latest figures from OpenRouter show Chinese models handled a staggering 12.96 trillion tokens during the first week of April - enough to fill about 26 million novels.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Alibaba's Qwen3.6 Plus emerged as the clear frontrunner, processing 4.6 trillion tokens alone - more than all U.S.-based models combined. Xiaomi's MiMo-V2-Pro took second place despite a slight dip in usage, while three other Chinese models rounded out the top five.

"What we're seeing is a fundamental shift in the AI landscape," noted industry analyst Li Wei. "Chinese developers aren't just catching up - they're setting the pace now."

The gap between East and West continues to widen. While Chinese model usage jumped 31% week-over-week, American alternatives saw barely any growth at just 0.76%. Collectively, U.S. models processed just 3.03 trillion tokens - less than Alibaba's top performer managed alone.

Beyond the Rankings

This sustained leadership reflects deeper technological advances:

  • Performance improvements in Chinese language processing
  • Cost-effective solutions attracting more users
  • Expanding real-world applications across industries

From customer service chatbots to medical diagnostics, these models are powering China's digital transformation. The technology is no longer just impressive on paper - it's delivering tangible business results nationwide.

What Comes Next?

With such momentum, industry watchers predict Chinese firms will continue pushing boundaries:

  • More specialized models for niche applications
  • Tighter integration with cloud services
  • Potential breakthroughs in multimodal AI

The question isn't whether China will maintain its lead, but how much farther ahead it can pull.

Key Points:

  • 12.96 trillion tokens processed by Chinese models last week (31% growth)
  • Alibaba Qwen3.6 Plus tops global rankings with 4.6 trillion tokens
  • U.S. models trail significantly at just 3 trillion total tokens processed
