Apple's iOS 27 Keyboard Gets Smarter: AI That Understands What You Mean to Type

Apple's Big Bet: An iPhone Keyboard That Reads Between the Lines

Your iPhone's keyboard is about to get a whole lot smarter. According to Bloomberg's reliable Apple insider Mark Gurman, iOS 27 will introduce advanced AI capabilities that transform simple autocorrect into something closer to having Grammarly built directly into your device.

Beyond Spell Check: Understanding Intent

The current autocorrect system often feels like a strict grammar teacher - catching obvious mistakes but missing nuance. The iOS 27 keyboard aims to be more like a writing partner:

  • Context-aware suggestions: Instead of just fixing typos, it will recommend more eloquent word choices based on what you're actually trying to say
  • Logical error detection: It can flag when you've used the wrong "there/their/they're" or other contextually incorrect words
  • Privacy-focused design: About 90% of the processing happens directly on your phone using the neural engine, keeping your conversations private

"This isn't just about fixing mistakes anymore," explains Gurman. "Apple wants your keyboard to help you express yourself better."

The Fine Print: Hardware Requirements and More

There's a catch - this smart typing assistant will only work on iPhones with A17 Pro chips or newer (basically devices that support Apple Intelligence). The local processing requirements are simply too demanding for older models.

The keyboard upgrade is part of what Gurman describes as a "Snow Leopard"-style update for iOS - less about flashy redesigns and more about refining core experiences. Other expected AI improvements include:

  • Siri 2.0: Handling complex, multi-part requests in a single interaction
  • Third-party assistant access: Potential integration with tools like ChatGPT or Google Gemini through Siri

Key Points:

  • iOS 27's keyboard will use AI to understand writing context and intent
  • Features include smart word suggestions and contextual error correction
  • Processing happens primarily on-device for privacy protection
  • Only available on iPhones with A17 Pro chip or newer
  • Part of broader Apple Intelligence improvements coming in iOS 27
