We've all downloaded those handy Chrome extensions promising to boost our productivity with artificial intelligence. But new research suggests we might be paying for convenience with our privacy.
Widespread Data Collection Uncovered
Data deletion service Incogni analyzed 442 "AI" labeled Chrome extensions totaling 115.5 million downloads. Their findings? Over 50% collect user data, with nearly one-third accessing personally identifiable information (PII). That means when you're using these tools to write emails or transcribe meetings, they could be watching more than just your work.
"The permissions these extensions request often go far beyond their stated purpose," explains cybersecurity analyst Mark Reynolds. "A writing assistant shouldn't need your precise location any more than a weather app needs access to your documents."
High-Risk Categories Revealed
The study pinpointed four particularly problematic extension types:
- Programming assistants
- Math solving tools
- Meeting transcription services
- Voice-to-text converters
These tools frequently use "script writing" permissions - essentially a digital hall pass allowing them to monitor everything you type and modify webpage displays. Approximately 92 million users have potentially exposed their data through these permissions alone.
Surprisingly, several household names appeared on the risk list:
- Grammarly (writing assistant)
- Quillbot (AI content detector)
- Google Translate
- ChatGPT Search
Their inclusion stems not from malicious intent but from the sheer volume of user data they process daily.
Protecting Yourself Without Sacrificing Productivity
The solution isn't necessarily deleting every AI extension, but becoming permission-savvy:
- Match permissions to purpose: If a calculator wants camera access, that's a red flag.
- Question location requests: Why would a text editor need to know where you are?
- Review regularly: Check your installed extensions monthly and remove unused ones.
- Consider alternatives: Some privacy-focused developers create versions with minimal data collection.
The golden rule? If personal data leaves your device unnecessarily or without anonymization, consider it an unacceptable security risk.
