Tmall Tightens Rules for AI Software Listings to Protect Buyers
Tmall Cracks Down on Misleading AI Product Listings
In a bid to clean up its digital shelves, Alibaba's Tmall has introduced sweeping new regulations for AI software and application products. The updated standards, which took effect last week, target everything from product categorization to advertising claims.
Clear Categories, Clearer Choices
Merchants now face strict requirements about where they list AI products. All generative AI tools, large language model services, and multimodal applications must be filed under a dedicated category: "Online Store / Online Services / Software -> AI Software and Applications." This move should help shoppers quickly find what they're looking for without sifting through irrelevant listings.
Truth in Advertising
The platform is putting its foot down on misleading claims. Gone are the days when sellers could promise "100% accuracy" or "no account suspensions" without consequences. Tmall now requires merchants to:
- Clearly state delivery methods
- Specify token quotas or membership durations in numeric terms
- Provide realistic performance estimates
- Disclose network requirements for overseas services
Fair Pricing Practices
Token packages and subscription plans must now reflect market rates, with prohibitions against pushing consumers toward high-value prepayments or off-platform transactions. "We want buyers to feel confident they're getting a fair deal," a Tmall spokesperson explained.
Enforcement with Teeth
Merchants who flout the rules risk serious consequences, including:
- Product removals
- Listing deletions
- Account point deductions
The platform has already begun enforcing these measures, removing several listings that failed to meet the new transparency standards.
"These changes come at a crucial time," says e-commerce analyst Li Wei. "As AI tools proliferate, consumers need protection from overhyped claims and unclear terms."
Key Points:
- 🛒 Dedicated category for AI products makes shopping easier
- 🔍 Stricter truth-in-advertising rules combat misleading claims
- 💰 Pricing must reflect market rates without pressure tactics
