South Koreans Now Spend More on AI Subscriptions Than Netflix

AI Subscriptions Outpace Netflix in South Korea

Move over, binge-watching - South Koreans have found a new subscription obsession. Fresh data reveals that monthly spending on AI services has officially overtaken Netflix payments in the country, marking a significant shift in digital consumption habits.

The Numbers Behind the Trend

As of December 2025, South Koreans collectively spend approximately 80.3 billion KRW ($55-60 million) each month on seven major AI platforms. This figure edges past Netflix's average monthly revenue of 75 billion KRW in the country. What makes this development particularly striking is how quickly AI services have climbed the subscription ladder.

The growth trajectory paints a vivid picture: credit card transactions for AI services skyrocketed from just 52,000 in early 2024 to a staggering 166 million by late 2025. Individual users typically pay around 34,700 KRW ($24) monthly, while businesses demonstrate even greater appetite with average spends of 107,400 KRW ($74).

Market Leaders and Challengers

ChatGPT continues its reign as the undisputed champion, commanding an impressive 71.5% market share. Google's Gemini (11%) and Anthropic's Claude (10.7%) trail behind but maintain strong positions in this rapidly evolving landscape.

"We're witnessing generative AI transition from novelty to necessity," observes tech analyst Ji-hoon Park. "As these tools become more sophisticated and integrated into daily workflows, their value proposition strengthens considerably."

The competition remains fierce beneath ChatGPT's dominance. Both Gemini and Claude have been aggressively expanding their Korean-language capabilities and local partnerships - moves that could reshape market dynamics in coming quarters.

Why This Matters Beyond Korea

South Korea's embrace of paid AI services offers valuable insights for global markets:

  • High smartphone penetration creates ideal conditions for mobile-first AI adoption
  • Strong digital infrastructure supports seamless integration of cloud-based tools
  • Cultural emphasis on productivity fuels demand for efficiency-boosting solutions

The Korean case suggests we may be approaching an inflection point where consumers willingly pay for premium AI features rather than settling for free tiers.

Key Points:

  • Subscription shift: Monthly AI spending hits record $60M+, surpassing Netflix revenue
  • Usage explosion: Transactions grew from thousands to millions within two years
  • Market hierarchy: ChatGPT dominates while Gemini and Claude vie for position
  • Enterprise adoption: Businesses spend nearly triple what individual users do
