Sora Announces Major Updates: Pets as Stars, Social Channels, Android Launch

Sora Unveils Major Upgrades Amid Rapid Growth

Less than a month after its invitation-only launch in the US and Canada, OpenAI's AI video generation app Sora has already surpassed 2 million downloads, dominating the App Store charts. Bill Peebles, head of Sora, announced via X (formerly Twitter) on October 22 that substantial updates are imminent across three key areas: character expansion, video editing, and social interaction. He also confirmed the long-awaited Android version is "coming soon."

Pets Take Center Stage

The most notable update is the full release of "Cameo" functionality, which now extends beyond human subjects. Previously limited to creating digital avatars from user selfies, Sora will soon allow pets, stuffed animals, and nearly any object to star in AI-generated videos.

"You can turn your dog, hamster, favorite toy—or almost anything—into a cameo," Peebles stated. To manage the expected influx of creative characters, Sora will feature real-time displays of "popular cameos" on its generation interface.

Enhanced Video Editing Tools Launching

For the first time, Sora is introducing basic video editing capabilities. The initial rollout will support combining multiple AI-generated clips into cohesive videos. OpenAI plans to expand these tools with advanced features like trimming and transitions in future updates.

Social Features Get Community Focus

The platform is restructuring its social experience by developing exclusive community channels. These private spaces will enable collaborative content creation among groups like universities, companies, and sports clubs—potentially transforming Sora from personal entertainment into a group creation platform.

Content Moderation Improvements

Responding to user feedback about strict review processes, OpenAI is refining its content moderation system. The company aims to reduce false positives while maintaining safety standards. Performance upgrades are also underway to enhance generation speed.

Android Version Confirmed

The Google Play Store has opened pre-registrations for Sora's Android release. While no specific date was announced, industry analysts predict massive adoption given the app's iOS performance—surpassing one million monthly active users despite its invitation-only model.

Key Points:

  • Pet avatars: Cameo feature expands to animals and objects
  • Editing suite: Basic video assembly tools launching
  • Social channels: Private community spaces coming
  • Android version: Pre-registrations now open
  • Moderation changes: Reduced false positives planned
