Paycom Cuts 500 Jobs, Replaces Roles with AI

Paycom Lays Off 500 Employees Amid AI Transition

Oklahoma City-based HR software firm Paycom has terminated more than 500 employees, replacing their roles with artificial intelligence (AI) tools. The abrupt layoffs, communicated via text messages instructing workers not to report to the office, have drawn significant attention and criticism.

Sudden Notification Sparks Outrage

Employees learned of their job eliminations during a hastily arranged online webinar. One affected worker told local news outlet KOCO: "When I first heard this news, it felt like being struck by lightning." The employee expressed skepticism about the company's automation rationale, questioning whether the changes truly benefited customers or simply served to reduce labor costs.

Company Defends Restructuring

Paycom described the move as part of a "workforce restructuring strategy", claiming the AI implementation would primarily affect non-customer-facing positions. However, multiple terminated employees disputed this characterization. "We all deal with customers," one worker stated. "If Paycom says otherwise, it's not true."

The laid-off staff will receive 10 weeks of severance pay and transition assistance. Their personal belongings are being shipped to them.

Ongoing Hiring Amid Layoffs

While eliminating these positions, Paycom emphasized it continues hiring in other departments. However, the company confirmed the displaced workers' specific functions will now be handled entirely by AI systems. This contradiction has fueled frustration among former employees.

An anonymous worker captured the sentiment: "I understand AI, but I never thought it would happen to me."

The mass layoff highlights growing tensions as companies increasingly adopt automation technologies, raising questions about workforce displacement and corporate responsibility during technological transitions.

Key Points:

  • 🔹 Paycom eliminated 500+ jobs, replacing them with AI tools
  • 🔹 Employees received termination notices via text messages
  • 🔹 Company calls it "workforce restructuring" while continuing other hiring
  • 🔹 Severance includes 10 weeks pay but no option for role retention
