Opera's New Feature Lets You Chat with Multiple AI Assistants While Browsing

Opera Breaks Down AI Walled Gardens with New Browser Feature

Imagine having ChatGPT help with your research while Claude summarizes articles - all within your browser. That's exactly what Opera's new Browser Connector enables. Launched this week, the free feature represents a significant step toward more open AI integration in web browsing.

How It Works

The magic happens through Anthropic's Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that creates secure connections between AI models, data sources, and search engines. Think of it as a universal translator for different AI systems. Opera had already implemented MCP in its premium Opera Neon browser last month, but now brings this capability to its mainstream browsers.

"We're giving users the freedom to mix and match AI tools like building blocks," explains Moahmed Salah, Opera's Senior Product Director. "Instead of being confined to one company's ecosystem, people can now combine the best features from different AI assistants."

Simple Setup, Powerful Results

Getting started takes just minutes:

  1. Search for "AI service" in your Opera browser settings
  2. Install the Browser Connector
  3. Connect to ChatGPT, Claude, or other supported AI tools

Once configured, the AI assistants can access information about your currently open tabs and browsing context. Need help understanding a complex article? Want to generate ideas based on the webpage you're viewing? The AI tools now have that context at their digital fingertips.

Why This Matters

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into our daily digital lives, browser developers face a critical question: Should they favor exclusive partnerships or open ecosystems? Opera has clearly chosen the latter path. This approach not only benefits users but could pressure other browser makers to follow suit.

The timing couldn't be better. With AI capabilities advancing rapidly, many users find themselves constantly switching between different AI tools depending on the task. Opera's solution eliminates that friction while maintaining privacy and security through the MCP framework.

Key Points

  • Multi-AI browsing: Access ChatGPT, Claude, and other AI tools simultaneously
  • Universal standard: Built on Anthropic's open Model Context Protocol
  • Easy setup: Install the connector and connect your preferred AI services
  • Context-aware: AI assistants understand what you're currently viewing
  • Available now: Works with Opera One and Opera GX browsers
