OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT Shopping with Shopify Integration

OpenAI Quietly Adds Shopify as Search Partner

OpenAI has discreetly integrated Shopify as a third-party search partner to enhance ChatGPT's shopping search features. The update, which was not officially announced, was discovered in OpenAI's updated documentation by LinkedIn user Aleyda Solís. According to Solís, Shopify and Bing were added as third-party search providers on May 15, 2025, shortly after OpenAI announced an improved shopping experience on April 28.

Multi-Platform Merchant Display

ChatGPT's shopping search now returns results from various e-commerce platforms. For instance, a search for "dog supplies" may yield results from Shopify-hosted websites as well as Turbify (formerly Yahoo Stores). Rich results, including images, are sourced from Shopify and Amazon merchants, while at least one recommended seller in the listings is hosted on Turbify.

ChatGPT Shopping Features

OpenAI's shopping functionality in ChatGPT Search resembles traditional search results but often includes rich text elements such as images, price metadata, and star ratings. The system leverages structured data, likely Schema markup, to generate product titles, descriptions, and even summarized reviews. While OpenAI hasn't explicitly confirmed the use of Schema, the displayed metadata suggests its involvement.

Merchant Ranking and Data Integration

Merchant visibility in ChatGPT's shopping results depends on how OpenAI processes data from its partners, currently Bing and Shopify. E-commerce stores not on Shopify can apply to be included in OpenAI's shopping search, provided they also allow OpenAI's web crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to index their content. This collaboration broadens OpenAI's product data sources while offering Shopify merchants additional exposure.

Key Points

  • Shopify added as third-party search partner without formal announcement.
  • ChatGPT now displays multi-platform merchant results, including Shopify, Amazon, and Turbify.
  • Shopping results feature rich metadata, such as images and star ratings.
  • Merchant ranking depends on data from Bing and Shopify.
  • Non-Shopify stores can apply for inclusion via OAI-SearchBot integration.
