Meituan Bets Big on AI to Transform Local Services with New 'LongCat' Model
Meituan's AI Ambition: Reshaping Local Services from the Ground Up
As competition intensifies in China's local services market, Meituan is placing a bold bet on artificial intelligence to maintain its edge. The company's CEO Wang Xing recently revealed their aggressive AI strategy during an earnings call, signaling a fundamental shift in how the platform operates.
A Three-Year Head Start
Unlike competitors scrambling to join the AI race, Meituan has been quietly building its capabilities since early 2023. "This isn't some rushed reaction to current trends," explains industry analyst Li Wei. "They've been methodically assembling both talent and technology for years."
The company took a dual-track approach:
- Heavy investment in developing their proprietary LongCat large model
- Strategic partnerships with leading AI research teams
Meet Xiaotuan: Your New AI Shopping Assistant
The first visible fruit of this labor is "Xiaotuan," an AI assistant now integrated throughout Meituan's app. It's designed to fundamentally change how users search for and select local services - from food delivery to beauty appointments.
"Imagine needing a last-minute haircut," demonstrates product manager Zhang Ying. "Instead of scrolling through endless options, Xiaotuan understands your preferences, checks real-time availability, and suggests the perfect salon nearby - all through natural conversation."
Beyond Software: The Robot Revolution
Meituan's ambitions extend far beyond smartphone screens. At the recent Zhongguancun Forum, their Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center unveiled plans for an open-source ecosystem in embodied intelligence.
This could soon transform:
- Food delivery with autonomous robots navigating complex urban environments
- Customer service through intelligent kiosks that understand gestures and emotions
- Inventory management in warehouses using adaptive robotic systems
"The synergy between our digital and physical AI initiatives creates something greater than the sum of its parts," Wang Xing noted during his presentation.
Key Points:
- Meituan has invested heavily in AI development for three years
- Their LongCat large model powers new assistant Xiaotuan across all services
- Embodied intelligence projects aim to revolutionize delivery and logistics
- CEO describes this as an "offensive" strategy rather than defensive move
- Combined digital/physical approach could redefine local service standards
