JD.com Brings Robot Rentals to Life with New Physical Store

JD.com Takes Robotics Mainstream with Rental Service Launch

The future of robotics just got more accessible. On December 31st, JD.com unveiled its first brick-and-mortar robot experience center at JD MALL in Beijing's Shuangjing district, created in partnership with robotics firm Unitree. This flagship location represents more than just another retail space - it's a gateway bringing advanced robotics within reach of ordinary consumers.

Affordable Access Through Rental Model

"Why buy when you can rent?" seems to be JD.com's new mantra for cutting-edge technology. The company announced an innovative rental program allowing customers to experience robotic companions without the steep upfront costs. From playful quadrupedal "robot dogs" to sophisticated humanoid assistants, these marvels of engineering are now available through flexible daily or long-term rental plans.

"We're removing the financial barriers that have kept this technology out of most people's homes," explained JD's robotics division lead during the opening ceremony. "Our goal is to make embodied intelligence something people can actually interact with and benefit from."

Hands-On Experience Across Life Scenarios

The sprawling JD MALL location (spanning 30,000-80,000 square feet like its 26 sister stores nationwide) transforms robotics from abstract concept to tangible reality. Visitors can test how these mechanical assistants perform actual tasks:

  • Home Helpers that navigate living spaces with surprising grace
  • Educational Companions engaging children in interactive learning
  • Healthcare Assistants demonstrating potential medical applications
  • Entertainment Specialists showcasing their dance moves and playful interactions

"Seeing is believing," remarked one early visitor watching a robot delicately serve tea. "I never thought I'd be handing my cup to a machine."

Strategic Partnerships Accelerate Adoption

The collaboration between e-commerce giant JD.com and robotics specialist Unitree combines retail muscle with technical expertise. While JD brings its vast distribution network and customer base, Unitree contributes cutting-edge robotic platforms like their acclaimed Go1 robot dog.

Industry analysts see this as a smart play:

"Rental models dramatically lower adoption barriers," notes tech analyst Li Wei. "For robotics to go mainstream, people need affordable ways to discover their real-world value beyond YouTube demos."

The Beijing flagship represents just the beginning - JD plans similar experiential centers across China throughout 2026.

Key Points:

  • First physical store combining JD's retail power with Unitree's robotics expertise
  • Rental program makes expensive robots accessible through flexible terms
  • Immersive demonstrations showcase practical home, education and healthcare uses
  • National expansion planned following successful Beijing launch
