Instagram Co-Founder Shifts Gears to Lead Anthropic's Innovation Lab

Instagram Co-Founder Takes Hands-On Role in Anthropic's Innovation Push

In a strategic move highlighting Anthropic's commitment to rapid innovation, Mike Krieger - Instagram co-founder and current Chief Product Officer - is transitioning to lead the company's experimental "Labs" division. This shift comes at what Krieger describes as "a critical inflection point" for artificial intelligence development.

From Product Leadership to Frontline Development

The Labs team, initially launched in mid-2024 with just two members, represents Anthropic's skunkworks operation focused on cutting-edge AI applications. Krieger will now co-lead this group alongside Ben Mann, head of product engineering, reporting directly to company president Daniela Amodei.

"I'm itching to get my hands dirty again," Krieger told reporters. "With AI capabilities advancing at breakneck speed, we've got this narrow window where we can fundamentally shape how these technologies impact society. That kind of opportunity doesn't come around often."

Doubling Down on Innovation

Anthropic plans aggressive expansion for Labs:

  • Team size set to double within six months
  • Focus on solving "the world's toughest problems" through AI
  • Direct collaboration between leadership and engineers

The restructuring sees Ami Vora stepping up as Product Lead, inheriting Krieger's previous responsibilities. She'll work closely with CTO Rahul Patil to guide development of Claude, Anthropic's flagship AI assistant.

Racing Against Tech Titans

This executive shuffle comes amid intensifying competition between AI startups and established tech giants. By placing one of Silicon Valley's most successful product minds directly into its innovation engine, Anthropic appears determined to maintain its edge through rapid experimentation rather than bureaucratic product cycles.

Krieger puts it bluntly: "The best way to predict the future is to build it yourself."

Key Points:

  • Leadership shift: Mike Krieger moves from CPO role to co-lead experimental Labs team
  • Team expansion: Anthropic doubling Labs staff within six months
  • Strategic timing: Comes during crucial phase for shaping AI applications
  • Competitive landscape: Move positions startup against deep-pocketed tech rivals
