India Emerges as AI Powerhouse with 100 Million Weekly ChatGPT Users
India's AI Boom Catches Global Attention
At the dawn of the "India AI Impact Summit," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman made a striking revelation in The Times of India: the country now boasts 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, cementing its position as the platform's second-largest market worldwide after the United States.

Affordable Access Fuels Rapid Adoption
Recognizing India's price-sensitive market, OpenAI launched several strategic moves after establishing its New Delhi office last August. The introduction of "ChatGPT Go," a budget-friendly version, combined with a free one-year access offer, proved particularly successful among students. Today, India hosts the world's largest student user base for ChatGPT.
But competition is heating up. Google plans to counter with its own free AI Pro subscription for Indian students starting this September. "India currently leads global usage rates for our Gemini learning app," confirmed Google VP Chris Phillips.
Scaling Beyond User Numbers
While ChatGPT nears 900 million global weekly users, monetization in India presents unique challenges. Altman pointed to infrastructure limitations and market sensitivity as key hurdles not seen in developed economies.
The Indian government isn't sitting idle. Through its "India AI Mission," officials are accelerating computing power expansion and startup support. Altman cautioned against potential inequality, warning that without proper "democratization" of AI, economic benefits might concentrate among few players.
