Google Mandates Student Identity Verification for AI Pro Plan

Google Enforces Student Verification for AI Pro Plan Access

Google has implemented a mandatory identity verification process for students accessing its free AI Pro subscription plan, originally launched in May 2025. This premium offering, which typically carries significant costs, provides students with advanced AI tools including the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, research capabilities, and 2TB of cloud storage through educational institutions' email domains.

Verification Requirements and Process

The tech giant now requires users to submit official documentation proving their current enrollment status through SheerID, a third-party verification platform. Acceptable documents include:

  • Valid student IDs
  • Tuition payment receipts
  • Registration confirmations
  • Official enrollment letters

This measure specifically targets users in six supported countries: United States, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, India, and Brazil. Students outside these regions cannot currently complete verification.

Compliance Deadline and Consequences

Google has set a firm deadline of September 23, 2025 for compliance. Users failing to complete verification by this date will lose access to the free tier. The company has not yet disclosed procedures for handling failed verifications or potential appeal processes.

Policy Rationale

A Google spokesperson stated: "This verification ensures our educational resources reach legitimate students while preventing system abuse." The move follows reports of non-students exploiting university email systems to access the premium features.

The AI Pro plan represents Google's strategic investment in cultivating next-generation tech talent by providing free access to cutting-edge tools that would otherwise be cost-prohibitive for most students.

Key Points:

  • 📅 Deadline: September 23, 2025 for verification completion
  • 🌍 Supported Countries: US, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, India, Brazil only
  • 🆔 Required Docs: Student ID, tuition receipt or enrollment confirmation
  • ⚠️ Consequence: Unverified accounts lose free subscription access
