The key? Centralized computing power. In today's AI research, Hassabis says processing capability has become the ultimate limiting factor. "It's like having a Formula 1 team but only one set of tires," he quipped. The solution was pooling previously scattered resources to fuel priority projects like their Gemini large language model.

This restructuring has yielded surprising results. Hassabis proudly notes that approximately 90% of fundamental AI breakthroughs now emerge from Google-affiliated labs. The secret lies in combining Google's vast infrastructure with the nimbleness of smaller companies.

"When you're small, every decision matters," Hassabis observed. "We've brought that mentality to a tech giant." The approach mirrors strategies at Amazon (where speed and standards coexist) and Apple (which Steve Jobs famously called "the world's largest startup").

The changes come as competition intensifies. OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude have captured public attention, but Hassabis believes DeepMind's new structure gives them an edge. "We can pivot faster than people expect from a company our size," he said.

This isn't just about keeping up—it's about reclaiming leadership. As AI enters more complex territory, DeepMind aims to dominate multiple frontiers through what Hassabis describes as "a culture of simplicity and speed."
