Alibaba Shakes Up AI Leadership: Fei-Fei Li Takes Cloud CTO Role as Tongyi Lab Gains Prominence

Alibaba Reshapes AI Strategy with High-Profile Appointments

In a bold move to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities, Alibaba Group has unveiled significant leadership changes and organizational restructuring. The tech giant is bringing in world-class talent while reshaping its internal AI research structure.

Star Power: Fei-Fei Li Joins Leadership Team

The most eye-catching change comes with the appointment of Fei-Fei Li, the Stanford professor and AI pioneer, as Chief Technology Officer of Alibaba Cloud. Known for her groundbreaking work in computer vision and ethical AI, Li will oversee technology development and AI infrastructure for China's cloud computing leader.

"Having someone of Dr. Li's caliber join speaks volumes about Alibaba's ambitions," said an industry analyst familiar with the company. "She brings both technical expertise and thought leadership that could redefine their cloud offerings."

Li will also serve on the newly formed Group Technology Committee, working alongside Jingren Zhou and Zeming Wu under CEO Jack Ma's direct leadership.

Tongyi Lab Gets Business Unit Status

Alibaba is giving its AI research arm a promotion. What was previously known as Tongyi Lab now becomes the Tongyi Large Model Business Unit, signaling its transition from research to commercial applications.

Jingren Zhou will lead this new division while serving as Chief AI Architect for the Technology Committee. Meanwhile, Zeming Wu shifts focus to group-level technical work, particularly AI inference platform development.

Strategic Context: Doubling Down on AI

The reorganization comes during what Alibaba describes as a pivotal year for its AI strategy:

  • The company recently established its ATH Business Group (Alibaba Token Hub) to explore token-based technologies
  • Its Qwen 3.6 Plus model recently topped OpenRouter's global usage rankings
  • Management changes include Yanqun Lei taking over as CEO of Taobao Flash Sales

"This isn't just shuffling deck chairs," observed a Shanghai-based tech reporter. "Alibaba is building what they believe will be the dream team for China's AI future - combining infrastructure, research, and commercialization under one coordinated vision."

Key Points:

  • Fei-Fei Li appointed CTO of Alibaba Cloud and joins new Group Technology Committee
  • Tongyi Lab upgraded to full business unit status focused on large models
  • Leadership realignment positions Zhou as Chief AI Architect, Wu on group tech projects
  • Moves follow Qwen model's strong market performance and ATH Business Group launch

Alibaba's New Algorithm Helps AI Think More Like Humans

Alibaba's Tongyi Lab has developed a breakthrough algorithm called FIPO that helps large language models identify and focus on the most important parts of complex reasoning tasks. Unlike traditional methods that struggle to distinguish critical information, FIPO uses a novel 'Future-KL' mechanism to reward tokens that significantly impact later reasoning steps. Early tests show impressive results, with models handling reasoning chains over 10,000 tokens long while improving accuracy in mathematical problem-solving.
