Claude's Strict ID Checks Fuel Privacy Fears and Account Suspension Worries
Claude's Controversial Identity Verification Policy Sparks Backlash
Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has rolled out a stringent identity verification system for its Claude AI assistant, requiring users to submit real-time photos of themselves holding government-issued IDs like passports or driver's licenses. The move, intended to prevent misuse, has instead ignited privacy concerns and fears of arbitrary account suspensions.

The verification process, handled by third-party company Persona, typically completes within five minutes. However, digital copies or temporary IDs won't pass muster - only physical documents in hand will do.
Account suspensions following verification have particularly alarmed users. Claude's FAQ lists multiple suspension triggers, including policy violations, accessing the service from unsupported locations, or simply being under 18. Persona's privacy policy reveals user data may be shared with 17 different sub-processors, adding fuel to privacy concerns.
One affected user, llm_nerd, shared how his 15-year-old son - a successful game developer earning more than his father - lost access to Claude Max after the system flagged his age. "We detected that your account was used by a child," read Anthropic's refund notice, highlighting the platform's strict age policy.
The Age Debate
What makes Claude's stance particularly contentious is its 18+ age limit - significantly higher than competitors like OpenAI and Gemini, which allow users as young as 13. Some speculate this could create perverse incentives, with users potentially exploiting the system by posing as minors to avoid fees.
Ironically, when questioned about the verification requirements, Claude's own Opus4.6 model described static ID photos as the "weakest link" in security systems, noting the company already employs three layers of protection:
- Credit card verification
- Behavioral data monitoring
- AI content review systems
Key Points
📌 Strict Verification: Claude mandates live photo ID checks, raising privacy alarms
📌 Account Risks: Verified users report sudden suspensions, particularly minors
📌 Age Controversy: The 18+ policy excludes younger developers, unlike competitors
📌 Security Paradox: Claude's own AI questions the effectiveness of photo verification
The policy has left many wondering: Is protecting against misuse worth potentially locking out talented young creators and compromising user privacy? As the debate continues, all eyes are on Anthropic to see if they'll adjust their approach.
