Claude's ID Check Sparks Privacy Fears and Account Lockouts

AI Platform's Strict ID Rules Leave Users Wary

Anthropic has rolled out a controversial identity verification system for its Claude AI that's leaving many users uncomfortable. Gone are the days of simple email signups - now you'll need to snap a real-time selfie while holding your passport, driver's license, or national ID. Scans and digital copies won't cut it.

Verification or Suspension Trap?

The process handled by third-party firm Persona takes about five minutes, but users report it often leads to unexpected account lockouts. Claude's FAQ clearly states violations like underage use or location restrictions can trigger suspensions. What's raising eyebrows is how verification appears connected to these bans.

"My 15-year-old son was building games with Claude Max and earning more than me," shared developer llm_nerd. "Then boom - account gone because they detected a minor. We got a refund notice saying it violated their policies."

Data Sharing Concerns Mount

Privacy policies reveal Persona may share verification data with 17 subcontractors, ostensibly for fraud prevention. This has users questioning who exactly accesses their sensitive documents and how the information gets used long-term.

Ironically, Claude's own AI model Opus4.6 called static ID photos the "weakest link" in security when questioned about the policy. The system already uses credit card checks, behavior monitoring, and content filters - making the ID requirement seem redundant to some.

Age Limit Debate Heats Up

While competitors like OpenAI and Gemini allow 13+ users, Anthropic draws a hard line at 18. This strict cutoff has spawned online jokes about "free token kids" but leaves legitimate young creators in the cold. The llm_nerd case shows even paying customers face abrupt termination without warning.

Key Points:

  • 📸 Live ID Mandate: Real-time photos with physical IDs required, no digital copies accepted
  • 🔒 Suspension Fears: Verification often precedes account lockouts, especially for minors
  • 🛡️ Privacy Tradeoffs: Data gets shared with multiple third parties for "fraud prevention"
  • 👶 Age Gap: 18+ policy blocks teen developers despite their legitimate use cases
