China Cracks Down on AI Tampering of Classic Films
China Takes Stand Against AI Manipulation of Cultural Classics

In a move to protect cultural heritage, Chinese regulators have declared war on AI-generated content that alters classic films and historical narratives. The State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television initiated a month-long special operation starting January 2026, targeting what officials call "malicious digital distortions" of China's cultural treasures.
What's Being Protected?
The campaign casts a wide net over three key areas:
- Literary classics: Particularly adaptations of China's "Four Great Classical Novels" that get twisted through AI manipulation
- Historical dramas: Films depicting important revolutionary moments or national heroes
- Role model portrayals: Any unauthorized alterations to depictions of celebrated figures
"These works aren't just entertainment—they carry our collective memory," explains media scholar Dr. Li Wenjing. "When algorithms start rewriting history or mocking our heroes, it crosses a line."
Platforms Take Action
The cleanup has already yielded significant results:
- Douyin (China's TikTok) removed 6,713 problematic videos
- Lifestyle platform Xiaohongshu took down 1,394 posts while penalizing 61 accounts
The removals came through a combination of AI detection systems and human reviewers working overtime during the campaign period.
Beyond the Cleanup
While the special operation concluded in February, officials emphasize this isn't temporary theater. Platforms must now implement permanent monitoring systems to prevent resurgence of violative content.
The administration warns: "We're building digital guardrails—not just for this month, but for the long haul."
The move reflects growing global concerns about synthetic media's impact on cultural preservation. As AI tools become more accessible worldwide, China's approach offers one model for balancing technological innovation with cultural protection.
Key Points:
- Month-long crackdown removed thousands of AI-altered videos
- Focused on protecting classic literature and historical narratives
- Major platforms implemented new detection systems
- Permanent monitoring mechanisms being established
