Broadcom Bets Big on AI Chips: $100 Billion Revenue Target by 2027

Broadcom Doubles Down on AI Chip Dominance

Broadcom's stock surged more than 5% in after-hours trading Wednesday after CEO Hock Tan unveiled ambitious targets for the company's artificial intelligence chip business. Speaking to investors, Tan projected that annual revenue from AI semiconductors would "significantly exceed $10 billion" within three years.

Custom Chips Fuel Growth

The semiconductor giant reported stellar first-quarter results, with AI-related sales more than doubling year-over-year to $8.4 billion. This surge helped drive Broadcom's total revenue up 29% to $19.3 billion. For the current quarter, executives expect AI chip revenue to climb further to $10.2 billion.

Tan attributed much of this growth to rising demand for custom chips (ASICs) from major technology firms. "We're seeing strong recovery in our ASIC business," he noted, adding that Broadcom has secured the necessary supply chain resources to meet this accelerating demand.

Tech Giants Drive Expansion

The CEO outlined how partnerships with industry leaders form the foundation of Broadcom's projections:

  • Google: Committed to 3 gigawatts (GW) of capacity
  • Anthropic: Another 3 GW secured
  • Meta: At least 2 GW planned
  • OpenAI: Adding 1 GW capacity

While acknowledging that revenue per GW can fluctuate, Tan emphasized these commitments provide reliable visibility into future performance.

Beyond Just Chips: A Strategic Position

Industry analysts highlight Broadcom's diversified portfolio as key to its long-term success in AI infrastructure:

  • Digital signal processors
  • Data processing units
  • Network switches

The company benefits from serving as a foundational technology partner even as clients develop their own custom chips - a trend that actually strengthens Broadcom's position rather than threatening it.

Key Points:

Massive Revenue Target: Broadcom aims for $100 billion+ in annual AI chip sales by 2027 ✅ Quarterly Momentum: Q1 saw AI revenue double year-over-year; Q2 projected at $10.2B ✅ Tech Partnerships: Custom chip demand from Google, Meta and others drives expansion ✅ Supply Chain Ready: Company says it has secured production capacity needed
