In a move that shakes up the AI development landscape, Anthropic announced Wednesday its acquisition of Seattle-based AI startup Vercept. This marks Anthropic's second major purchase targeting developer tools, following last December's acquisition of code agent engine Bun.
What Vercept Brings to the Table
Vercept carved out a niche developing tools for complex intelligent tasks, most notably Vy - their cloud-based computer agent capable of remotely controlling Apple MacBooks. Many saw Vy as pioneering work in "reimagining personal computing for the AI age."
The startup emerged from Seattle's A12 incubator, itself an offshoot of the prestigious Allen Institute for AI. Several co-founders previously conducted research at the institute, bringing strong technical credentials to the venture.
Mixed Reactions Surface
The deal hasn't been without controversy. While co-founders Kiana Ehsani, Luca Weihs and Ross Girshick joined Anthropic, not all team members made the transition. Investor and co-founder Oren Etzioni publicly criticized what he called a "regrettable" decision to shutter products barely a year after launch.
Etzioni, who also serves as a University of Washington professor, took particular issue with the tight 30-day migration window offered to customers. His LinkedIn post sparked a heated exchange with investor Seth Bannon about Vercept's management and commercialization strategy.
Talent Wars Heat Up
The acquisition underscores how fiercely AI companies are competing for top technical talent. With major players aggressively pursuing vertical integration, "acqui-hires" combining technology assets with research teams have become commonplace.
Ehsani defended the move on social media, calling Anthropic "the better path to accelerate her vision." Meanwhile Etzioni acknowledged achieving positive returns on his investment despite disappointment in seeing promising growth cut short.
Financial terms remain undisclosed. Vercept had raised $50 million total funding since its January 2023 seed round led by Bannon's A12. Notable angel investors included former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and Google AI chief Jeff Dean.
The acquisition strengthens Anthropic's position in both AI agents and developer tools - two increasingly competitive battlegrounds as foundational model companies expand their ecosystems.
