Amazon's Automation Plan Could Replace Over 600,000 Jobs by 2033

Amazon's Automation Strategy Targets Significant Workforce Reduction

According to internal documents obtained by The New York Times, Amazon is pursuing an ambitious automation strategy that could replace more than 600,000 jobs by 2033. Despite projected sales growth, the company plans to avoid hiring over 500,000 employees in the U.S. during this period.

Automation Goals and Economic Impact

Amazon's robotics team is working toward automating 75% of the company's operations. Internal projections suggest this could eliminate 160,000 U.S. jobs by 2027. Economically, automation is expected to save approximately 30 cents per item in warehousing and delivery costs, totaling potential savings of $12.6 billion between 2025 and 2027.

Public Relations Strategy Revealed

The documents also outline Amazon's approach to managing public perception of these workforce changes. Recommendations include:

  • Avoiding terms like "automation" and "artificial intelligence"
  • Using phrases like "advanced technology" or "collaborative robots"
  • Participating in community projects to maintain a positive image

Amazon has denied instructing executives to avoid specific terminology, stating community involvement is unrelated to automation plans.

Company Response: Documents 'Misleading'

Amazon spokesperson Kelly Nantel told The Verge that the leaked documents represent only one team's perspective and not company-wide strategy. "Leaked documents often provide incomplete and misleading descriptions," Nantel said, noting Amazon continues hiring with plans for 250,000 seasonal positions.

Expert Warns of Broader Implications

Nobel Prize-winning economist Daron Acemoglu expressed concern about Amazon's automation ambitions: "No one has as much incentive as Amazon to explore automation... Once they find a profitable way, it will be promoted to other companies." He warned Amazon could become a "net job destroyer" if its plans succeed.

Key Points:

  • Amazon aims to automate 75% of operations by 2033
  • Potential replacement of over 600,000 jobs despite sales growth
  • Estimated $12.6 billion savings from automation (2025-2027)
  • Company denies leaked documents reflect overall strategy
  • Experts warn of significant employment market impacts
