Alibaba Cloud Tweaks API Limits for Smoother AI Development

Alibaba Cloud Refines API Access for AI Developers

In a move to balance performance and accessibility, Alibaba Cloud announced updates to its BaiLian multimodal interaction development kit's API call limits. The changes, effective April 28, 2026, aim to create a more stable environment for developers working with AI-powered interaction technologies.

What's Changing

The new default rate limit settles at 10 queries per second (QPS), translating to:

  • 600 sessions per minute
  • 36,000 hourly sessions

"These thresholds cover most development and business scenarios," the company noted in its announcement. "We want to ensure smooth operations without compromising system reliability."

Who's Affected

Developers using the standard access tier will need to adjust to these new limits. However, there's good news for those with special arrangements:

  • Custom agreements remain unchanged
  • Enterprise clients with adjusted limits keep their current access levels

The cloud provider emphasized this isn't about restricting access but optimizing resource distribution. "Better traffic management means fewer service interruptions for everyone," the statement explained.

Why It Matters

As AI development tools gain popularity, cloud platforms face growing pressure to maintain service quality. These adjustments reflect Alibaba Cloud's attempt to:

  1. Prevent system overloads during peak usage
  2. Provide predictable performance benchmarks
  3. Support sustainable growth of AI applications

The company sees this as part of ongoing efforts to refine its developer ecosystem rather than a one-time fix.

Key Points:

  • New default limit: 10 QPS starting April 2026
  • Existing custom agreements: Remain unaffected
  • Goal: Improved stability through smarter resource allocation
  • Impact: Most development and testing scenarios covered by new thresholds
