Fundamental AI Lab Secures Major Funding With Unique Data Approach

In a significant move for the enterprise AI space, research lab Fundamental has emerged from stealth mode with $255 million in Series A funding and a $1.2 billion valuation. The round was led by prominent investors including Oak HC/FT and Salesforce Ventures, with personal participation from tech executives like Perplexity's CEO.

Breaking Away From the LLM Pack

While most AI labs chase language model breakthroughs, Fundamental is taking a different path with its Nexus product. CEO Jeremy Fraenkel explains: "Current models excel with text and media but stumble when facing the structured data that powers business decisions."

The Nexus model addresses this gap as a "large table model" (LTM) specifically designed for enterprise data analysis. Unlike probabilistic language models that might give different answers to the same question, Nexus provides deterministic outputs - crucial for reliable business intelligence.

Technical Differentiators

Nexus skips the Transformer architecture that dominates AI today. This allows it to process billions of data rows without traditional context window limitations. Early adopters report solving complex analytical tasks that previously required entire teams of data scientists.

The company isn't just promising potential - they're already delivering results. Multiple Fortune 100 companies have signed seven-figure contracts, and AWS has established Nexus as a deployable solution on their cloud platform.

"We're not trying to be another ChatGPT," Fraenkel notes. "Our goal is to become the analytical engine powering enterprise decision-making at scale."
