Elon Musk isn't known for pulling punches - and his latest legal salvo against OpenAI proves it. The tech billionaire has filed a blockbuster lawsuit in California, demanding OpenAI and Microsoft return what he calls $134 billion in "unjust enrichment."

From Nonprofit to 'Microsoft's AI Arm'

The heart of Musk's complaint? He claims OpenAI abandoned its original mission. "What began as a nonprofit dedicated to benefitting humanity has become Microsoft's closed-source AI division," Musk's legal team argues. Court documents reveal Musk believes his early investments (2015-2018) and technical contributions entitle him to compensation now that OpenAI has commercialized.

Microsoft's deep integration with OpenAI features prominently in the suit. From exclusive Azure cloud training to Windows system integration, Musk alleges these ties have turned OpenAI into Microsoft's "strategic weapon" against Google and Amazon.

OpenAI Fires Back

OpenAI didn't mince words in its response. A spokesperson called the lawsuit "a transparent attempt to disrupt our work while promoting xAI" - Musk's competing AI venture. They emphasized Musk left the board in 2018 and played no role in subsequent decisions.

"He's rewriting history," the spokesperson added, noting that commercial partnerships were necessary to fund expensive AI development.

Bigger Than Money

The timing raises eyebrows. Musk's xAI is racing to develop its Grok model for integration with X (formerly Twitter) and Tesla vehicles. Some see this lawsuit as both a business move and philosophical statement about AI governance.

Legal experts suggest even if Musk loses, the case could force OpenAI to re-examine:
