Meituan's AI Subsidiary Sees Leadership Shake-Up

Leadership Transition at Meituan's Tech Subsidiary

The baton has officially passed at Light Year Away, Meituan's strategic investment in artificial intelligence. Wang Huiwen, one of the company's co-founders and a longtime Meituan loyalist, has relinquished his positions as legal representative, director, and general manager.

New Leadership Takes Charge

Liu Yaping now assumes full control of the Beijing-based company, taking on all three key roles vacated by Wang. The transition also saw Liu Minjuan depart from her position as supervisor.

Founded in July 2018 with modest registered capital of 1 million yuan ($140,000), Light Year Away punches above its weight through its backing by Tianjin Sankuai Technology - Meituan's corporate entity.

Why This Small Company Matters

Despite its size, Light Year Away serves as Meituan's technological spearhead:

  • Acts as the parent company's innovation lab for AI development
  • Explores cutting-edge technical solutions beyond food delivery
  • Represents Meituan's long-term bet on emerging technologies

The leadership change raises questions about potential strategic shifts. Industry observers will be watching Liu Yaping's first moves closely for clues about Meituan's evolving tech priorities.

Key Points:

  • Leadership Transition: Complete handover from Wang Huiwen to Liu Yaping
  • Strategic Importance: Small subsidiary with outsized role in Meituan's tech ambitions
  • Future Direction: New leadership may signal changes in AI development strategy
