JD.com Offers 100K Prize for Best AI-Generated Short Films

JD.com Launches High-Stakes AI Film Competition

Tech giant JD.com is putting serious money behind AI creativity with its first-ever AI Film Creation Competition, offering a top prize of ¥100,000 for the most impressive short films generated using artificial intelligence tools.

The competition centers around JD.com's digital mascots - the Lunar New Year IP "Ma Honghong" and virtual boy band E'Core - though participants can also feature approved product images. Think of it as American Idol meets AI filmmaking, where algorithms get creative control.

Submission Requirements That Matter

Entries must run at least 15 seconds and showcase deep integration of AIGC (AI-generated content) technology across multiple aspects:

  • Visual generation
  • Digital human animation
  • Audio synthesis

The company emphasizes creative freedom regarding tools but draws a hard line on copyright: "While we encourage boundary-pushing AI innovation, any non-AI elements like music or fonts must come with full commercial rights," warns the official competition brief.

Prize Structure Breakdown

The total prize pool combines three categories:

  1. Main Awards: ¥50K (1st), ¥30K (2nd), ¥20K (3rd)
  2. Ma Honghong Bonus: Additional ¥10K for standout works featuring JD's equine mascot (submissions open January 19)
  3. Brand Prizes: Undisclosed rewards from JD partners

Judging Goes Half-Tech, Half-Human

The evaluation process splits evenly between:

  • Data metrics (50%)
  • Expert panel review (50%) scoring on:
    • Visual appeal
    • Creative interpretation of themes
    • Technical mastery of AI tools
    • Originality

The quick-turnaround competition promises initial screening within 48 hours of submission, with winners announced February 6.

"This isn't just about flashy tech," notes a JD spokesperson. "We're looking for stories that resonate emotionally while showcasing what's possible when human creativity partners with artificial intelligence."

Key Points:

  • Open call for AI-generated short films featuring JD.com IPs
  • Minimum 15-second runtime requirement
  • No restrictions on AI tools used
  • Strict copyright compliance enforced
  • ¥100,000 total prize pool
  • Judging combines algorithmic and human evaluation
  • Winners announced February 6
