Chinese AI Models Break Through: Doubao Challenges Global Leaders, Xiaomi Excels in Math

Chinese AI Models Rise to Global Challenge

China's artificial intelligence sector is undergoing a quiet revolution - domestic models are no longer just keeping pace with international counterparts but beginning to challenge them in core technical areas. The March 2026 SuperCLUE benchmark results tell this compelling story of technological ascent.

The Global Picture: A Tightening Race

While overseas giants still lead the pack, the gap is narrowing faster than many expected. Anthropic's Claude-Opus-4.6 maintains its top position, followed closely by Google's Gemini-3.1-Pro and OpenAI's GPT-5.4. But the real headline comes from China - ByteDance's Doubao (Doubao-Seed-2.0-pro) now sits just 0.95 points behind GPT-5.4 with its 71.53 score.

What makes Doubao's performance remarkable isn't just its overall ranking but its strength in specific domains like intelligent agent task planning, where it outperformed several Western models to crack the global top five.

Xiaomi's Math Whiz: MiMo Surprises Experts

Xiaomi Group, better known for smartphones than AI research, delivered one of the evaluation's standout performances with its MiMo-V2 series. The Pro version scored an exceptional 84.03 in mathematical reasoning tasks - a result that turned heads in academic circles.

The company fielded two models in the evaluation:

  • MiMo-V2-Pro: Scored 60.67 overall while excelling in math
  • MiMo-V2-Flash: The open-source variant showed particular promise in code generation scenarios

Open Source Dominance: China Takes the Lead

The most lopsided victory came in open-source categories, where Chinese models claimed all podium positions:

  1. Kimi-K2.5-Thinking
  2. Qwen3.5-397B
  3. Other domestic models filling out the top ranks

These results suggest Chinese open-source AI has become the first choice for many global developers working outside proprietary ecosystems.

What This Means for AI Development

The March rankings reveal an important shift - Chinese models are moving beyond their traditional strength in Chinese language processing to compete head-to-head in fundamental areas like:

  • Logical reasoning
  • Mathematical problem-solving
  • Code generation capabilities

With Doubao climbing the ranks and Xiaomi demonstrating unexpected technical depth, China's AI ecosystem appears to be maturing rapidly.

Key Points:

  • Doubao now ranks among world's top AI systems (71.53 pts)
  • Just 0.95 points separates Doubao from OpenAI's GPT-5.4
  • Xiaomi's MiMo-V2-Pro scores 84.03 in mathematical reasoning
  • Chinese open-source models dominate their category
  • Evaluation covered 22 models across six core competencies
