Amazon Rolls Out the Welcome Mat for Rivr's Stair-Climbing Robot Dogs
Amazon Bets on Robotic 'Dogs on Wheels' to Conquer Final Delivery Hurdles
In a move that could revolutionize urban package delivery, Amazon has acquired Rivr, a Swiss robotics firm specializing in four-legged delivery robots. The Zurich-based startup's unique creations – affectionately dubbed "dogs wearing roller skates" by their creators – combine wheeled efficiency with the terrain-conquering abilities of legged robots.
Meet the Skateboarding Canine Robots

Rivr's star innovation is a hybrid robot that rolls like a dream on flat surfaces but can switch to climbing mode when faced with stairs or curbs. "Imagine a Labrador that moonlights as a skateboarder," quips Marko Bjelonic, Rivr's CEO and co-founder. This clever design solves one of delivery automation's toughest challenges: getting packages from the sidewalk to the doorstep in cities packed with architectural obstacles.
Why Amazon Went Shopping
The e-commerce giant didn't just stumble upon this technology. Amazon's Industrial Innovation Fund and Jeff Bezos' personal investment vehicle had already backed Rivr in its early days. With $25 million in prior funding and a valuation hitting $100 million, Rivr was clearly going places – now those places include Amazon fulfillment centers worldwide.
Bjelonic sees the acquisition as rocket fuel for his team's ambitions: "With Amazon's resources, we can stop dreaming about robotic helpers and start deploying them at scale," he posted on LinkedIn.
From Austin Pilot to Global Rollout?
Before becoming part of Amazon, Rivr had been testing its technology with delivery company Veho in Austin. The plan called for expanding to 100 robots by next year – targets that may now get dramatically revised upward. While deal specifics remain under wraps, industry watchers expect Rivr's technology to quickly become part of Amazon's logistics toolkit.
The timing couldn't be better. As online shopping grows more popular, traditional delivery methods strain under the weight of packages. These robotic climbers could be the solution for dense urban areas where front doors often sit atop steep staircases or behind tricky pathways.
Key Points:
- Hybrid Design: Rivr's robots combine wheels for speed with legs for obstacle navigation
- Strategic Fit: Acquisition follows Amazon's earlier investment in the startup
- Urban Solution: Technology specifically addresses challenges in city deliveries
- Quick Scaling: Existing pilot programs may expand rapidly under Amazon ownership
