72% of U.S. Teens Have Used AI Chatbots, Study Finds

A recent study conducted by the nonprofit Common Sense Media has found that 72% of American teenagers (aged 13-17) have tried AI chatbots at least once. The research, which surveyed 1,060 teens in April-May 2025, highlights the growing prevalence of AI companions among youth.

The Appeal of AI Companions

The study focused on AI chatbots designed for private conversations, such as those offered by Character.AI and Replika, as well as general chatbots like ChatGPT or Claude that allow personalized interactions. Notably:

  • 52% of teens use these tools regularly
  • 13% interact with AI daily
  • 21% engage several times weekly

Gender Differences and Usage Patterns

The research revealed gender disparities in adoption rates:

  • Boys (31%) were more likely than girls (25%) to report never having tried an AI chatbot

The study also uncovered diverse motivations for use:

  1. Entertainment (30%)
  2. Curiosity about AI technology (28%)
  3. Seeking advice (18%)
  4. Availability (17%)

Trust and Social Implications

While half (50%) of teens expressed distrust in AI-provided information (with older teens being more skeptical), the study found:

  • 33% found conversations with AI more satisfying than with real friends
  • 39% used chatbots to practice real-life interactions
  • Many reported improved social skills through AI interactions

Balancing Virtual and Real Relationships

The majority (80%) of teens said they spend more time with real friends than with AI companions, with only 6% reporting the opposite. However, the findings raise questions about:

  • The long-term impact on social development
  • Mental health considerations (following incidents like Character.AI's legal case)
  • Ethical implications of simulated relationships

Key Points:

  • 72% adoption rate: Most U.S. teens have tried AI chatbots
  • Regular users: Over half engage frequently with these tools
  • Diverse uses: From entertainment to social skill development
  • Trust gap: Half distrust AI information despite regular use
  • Social balance: Most still prioritize human relationships
