Zhipu AI's ARR Hits $1 Billion in 5 Months, Coding Strategy Pays Off

Zhipu AI has reportedly hit a major milestone: its annual recurring revenue (ARR) has reached $1 billion as of July 2026, according to multiple independent sources. The company hasn't commented on the report yet, but if true, it's a stunning leap—especially considering the ARR grew about 15 times between January and July this year.

Coding: The Secret Sauce

What's behind this rocket-like growth? A big part of the answer is AI coding. Over the past year, AI-powered coding tools and video generation have become the hottest areas in generative AI commercialization. Overseas, Anthropic's Claude Code hit $1 billion ARR within six months of launch, boosting the company's valuation. Now, Zhipu is following a similar playbook—but at an even faster pace.

Zhipu started doubling down on coding capabilities in early 2025. Founder Tang Jie has said that coding is a key ability that works hand-in-hand with AI agents. Since then, the company has been releasing new coding models roughly every two months. The GLM-5.2 model, launched in June 2026, pushed coding performance even further. Even as an open-source model, it matches or beats some closed-source rivals on key benchmarks.

Pricing Power and User Growth

Zhipu's pricing strategy has also been aggressive. In the first quarter of this year, the average price of its GLM API increased by about 83%, and overseas subscription prices are now close to Claude Code's. Yet, despite the higher prices, usage volume surged around 400%. That suggests users see real value in the product.

The Bigger Picture: Token Consumption and Commercial Value

As token consumption becomes a key metric for AI's commercial impact, AI coding is emerging as a vital productivity tool for enterprises and developers. Meanwhile, video generation is also showing strong commercial potential, with products moving into large-scale content production.

But the competition is heating up. MiniMax recently launched its M3 model, focusing on coding and agent capabilities. Yuede Dark Face released the K3 model, aiming to improve overall performance. And overseas, OpenAI is strengthening its AI programming offerings with GPT-5.6 and tighter integration between ChatGPT and CodeX.

What's Next?

The rapid growth of Zhipu's ARR validates the commercial potential of AI coding. But as more players pile in, the battle will shift to model capabilities, ecosystem building, and commercial efficiency. For now, Zhipu has shown that a focused coding strategy can pay off big—and fast.
