WorkBuddy Joins WeCom: 14M Firms Get an AI Coworker

Your New AI Coworker Just Clocked In

Imagine opening WeCom and seeing a new contact: WorkBuddy. It's not a person—it's Tencent's AI assistant, now fully embedded in WeCom. On October 14, Tencent announced that WorkBuddy can access messages, documents, meetings, and micro-drives (all within authorized limits) and has been added to the contact list as a chatbot. That means you can simply chat with it, just like you would with a human colleague.

What It Can Do (and How You Use It)

WorkBuddy is available for verified enterprises. You'll need WorkBuddy v5.8.0+ and WeCom v5.0.12+, and an admin must enable it first. Once set up, here's what it brings to your workday:

  • Message triage: It sorts unread messages and emails into "To Handle," "To Pay Attention To," and "Other," along with a summary and action items. No more drowning in notifications.
  • Context-aware forwarding: Forward a work message from a group chat to WorkBuddy, and it automatically recognizes referenced online docs, micro-drive files, schedules, to-dos, meetings, and smart minutes.
  • Direct commands: In the input box, you can reference micro-drive files or tell WorkBuddy to send messages or share products to private or group chats. It asks for confirmation before sending.

Seamless Switching and Collaboration

The WorkBuddy bot syncs context between the app and desktop, so you can switch devices and pick up right where you left off. Scheduled tasks and push notifications let you set it to run jobs on time and automatically send results back to you. In the document library, you can @mention and invite WeCom members to collaborate—just like you would with a human teammate.

Guardrails and Enterprise Control

Enterprises can manage account allocation, permissions, and usage from the admin console. Actions like viewing meeting content or searching emails require employee authorization, and WorkBuddy only operates within the authorized scope. So there's a clear boundary: it's powerful, but not intrusive.

Why This Matters

WeCom already covers over 14 million real enterprises and organizations, serving 750 million WeChat users. By connecting Tencent's connectivity with WorkBuddy's task execution, enterprises can avoid switching platforms or migrating data. AI agents are no longer a futuristic concept—they're quietly embedding themselves into existing office workflows. The question is: are you ready to add one to your contacts?
