Waymo's Ojai: A Self-Driving Taxi with Gemini AI and Three Screens

Waymo, the autonomous driving arm of Google's parent company Alphabet, has officially launched its new dedicated ride-hailing vehicle, the Ojai. This isn't just another self-driving car retrofit; it was designed from the ground up for shared mobility, with a flexible cabin and a completely revamped interior that marks the first major interface update in years.

A Conversational Co-Pilot

The biggest change is the deep integration of a conversational AI assistant called Gemini. Passengers can talk to it naturally—adjusting the air conditioning, asking for local restaurant recommendations, or even requesting the vehicle to pull over. The system understands voice commands and can respond via the screens. However, there's a crucial safety boundary: Gemini operates independently from the Waymo Driver system. It can't control the vehicle's movement or access real-time driving data. So, while you can ask it to find a coffee shop, you can't tell it to drive faster.

Three Screens, Smarter Together

Ojai's interior is a study in intelligent design. It comes equipped with three screens that automatically distribute content based on where passengers sit. The rear main seat gets full vehicle controls, while other screens show simplified trip status or ambient media players. This prevents information overload and keeps the ride intuitive. For those who prefer a quieter experience, a 'Calm Mode' dims the screens and hides non-essential elements, creating a more relaxing atmosphere.

Built for Ride-Hailing

Unlike retrofitted vehicles, the Ojai was purpose-built for ride-hailing. Its cabin is customizable, allowing Waymo to adapt the space for different passenger needs. The hardware and software work together to create a seamless experience from booking to drop-off.
