Tencent WorkBuddy Opens Platform, Aims to Become the OS of AI Agents

On September 2, Tencent WorkBuddy made a bold move: it threw open the doors of its AI Agent platform to the world. The launch of open.WorkBuddy.cn isn't just another tech announcement—it's a statement of intent. With over 100 ecosystem partners already on board, WorkBuddy is positioning itself as the connective tissue for the next generation of AI-powered work.

This is the first open platform in China's AI Agent space to bridge hardware, applications, and developers under one roof. And it's the first time WorkBuddy has fully revealed its ecosystem strategy since its debut in March this year.

A Platform, Not Just a Tool

"True productivity doesn't depend on how strong a tool is, but on how many capabilities it can connect and how many scenarios it can enter," said Liu Yi, Vice President of Tencent Cloud and head of Tencent CodeBuddy & WorkBuddy. "We hope to turn WorkBuddy into an operating system for the Agent era—not making a stronger tool, but creating a platform that can carry all tools."

That philosophy is already taking shape. At the launch event, nine co-branded smart hardware products were unveiled, featuring names like Plaud, Rokid, Insta360, iFLYTEK, Anker, Manner, and JD Jingzao. These aren't just gadgets with a logo slapped on—they're the first in their categories to tap into Agent capabilities.

Hardware Gets Smarter Together

Think about it: your smart glasses, voice recorder, earbuds, even your keyboard—they've all been islands of data. WorkBuddy aims to change that. By integrating over 30 brands across five key touchpoints—listening, watching, recording, chatting, and collaborating—the platform lets devices share the same AI foundation.

Manufacturers don't need to build their own AI or redesign their products. Once connected, accounts, tasks, memories, and outputs flow seamlessly between devices. Imagine wearing smart glasses into a meeting: the glasses capture audio and video, WorkBuddy handles understanding, planning, and execution. Speech transcription, meeting minutes, to-do lists, and follow-up emails—all handled through one chain. During an interview, everything you see and hear is automatically archived. Later, you can ask, "What did the client say about the budget last week?" and WorkBuddy will find it and help you act on it.

Buddy Apps: AI Workbenches for Every Industry

Beyond hardware, WorkBuddy introduced the "Buddy App"—a new entry point where partners can build branded AI workbenches tailored to specific industries. Partners don't need to develop AI from scratch; they bring their scenarios, business context, tools, and branding, and WorkBuddy provides the Agent foundation.

Already, over 30 partners have built applications spanning finance, law, healthcare, education, public welfare, and design. Companies like Tongda Xin, Guangfa Securities, Yifangda, Tencent SSV, Tencent Health, Peking University Law Database, Weimeng, Beisen, Fanruan, and Meitu Design Studio are on board.

Take the "Public Welfare Buddy" as an example. It integrates data from the Tencent Public Welfare platform, consolidating 11 scenario capsules and 42 scenario capabilities based on how public welfare organizations actually work. Supported by 15 intelligent agents, it covers everything from funding applications to due diligence analysis and charity law interpretation. Organizations that join the Tencent Public Welfare platform can even apply for 5,000 WorkBuddy credits per month in 2026.

Opening Up to Developers

For developers, the platform opens three core capabilities: Skill, Expert, and Connector. Using standard protocols, developers can easily integrate their systems, tools, and know-how into WorkBuddy. The Expert market offers both Agent-type and Team-type solutions, while Connectors support MCP and CLI, allowing connection to any external service.

More than 100 partners are already co-creating on the platform, spanning over 10 industries. And WorkBuddy is accelerating its payment and distribution channels, aiming to reward developers and enterprises for their expertise—and ultimately bring more value to users.

The Road Ahead: Industry Standards

"The barrier that 'Agent can do things' has already been crossed," said Lin Zuolu, head of the WorkBuddy open ecosystem. "The real challenge is to make sure it never stops in any device, any system, or any scenario."

That's why WorkBuddy is opening up. By breaking down capabilities into three paths—hardware, industry applications, and developers—they're helping every industry and partner bring Buddy into their own scenarios. The goal is to work together to create industry standards and build the foundational platform for the Agent era.

In terms of capability, WorkBuddy encapsulates its AI Agent Harness into callable interfaces. Partners just call standard APIs without heavy R&D investment. In terms of scenarios, WorkBuddy builds the foundation, while partners bring their data, tools, and processes. In terms of ecosystem, developers can build plugins, applications, and industry solutions, while hardware manufacturers can create next-generation smart terminals.

For users, the benefits are clear: your scattered context and content assets become interconnected. No more repeated logins, no more isolated devices. Context continues seamlessly, and Agents deliver higher quality results.

Momentum and Trust

"In the past few months, WorkBuddy has gained the trust of many users and enterprise customers," said Liu Yi. Since its launch in March, WorkBuddy has completed over 50 version updates and is already being used in over 50 industries, from government and education to retail, finance, media, and transportation.

In government, WorkBuddy launched in August for the Guangdong government system, with the Provincial Medical Insurance Bureau already piloting dozens of scenarios. In education, over 6,000 primary and secondary school teachers in Laizhou City, Shandong Province, now have AI teaching assistants. In media, WorkBuddy joined the CCTV reporting team for the World Economic Forum in Davos and the WAIC conference.

The message is clear: WorkBuddy isn't just building a better tool—it's building the platform that will carry all tools. And with its open ecosystem, it's inviting the world to build along with it.
