Tencent Merges Yuan and Multimodal Models, Yao Shunyu Takes the Helm

Tencent is shaking up its AI research structure. On July 23, the tech giant announced it has merged its multimodal model department with its large language model department, creating a new Basic Model Department. The new unit will be overseen by Tencent's Chief AI Scientist, Yao Shunyu.

The goal? To streamline model development and foster better collaboration between teams, ultimately pushing the boundaries of what full-modal models can achieve. It's a clear signal that Tencent is serious about integrating its AI capabilities.

This restructuring didn't come out of nowhere. Back in December, Yao Shunyu was already put in charge of the large language model department. Now, by bringing both the multimodal and language lines under one roof, Tencent is aligning the "seeing" and "talking" abilities of its Yuanmeng technology roadmap. Breaking down the silos between these two areas means there's now a single command center for refining full-modal models.

Key Points

  • Merger: Tencent combined its multimodal and large language model departments into a new Basic Model Department.
  • Leadership: Yao Shunyu, Tencent's Chief AI Scientist, will lead the new department.
  • Objective: Improve development efficiency and explore the limits of full-modal intelligence.
  • Context: The move follows Yao Shunyu's appointment as head of the large language model department last December, indicating a gradual consolidation of AI efforts.
