Tencent Games Rolls Out AI-Powered Anti-Addiction Measures for Summer
Tencent Games has announced its "2026 Summer Protection Action Plan for Minors," introducing an upgraded AI dual-engine anti-addiction model to strengthen safeguards during the summer gaming peak. The initiative, launched on July 3, combines AI technology with existing regulations to address persistent issues like account misuse and facial recognition bypassing.
Since China's stricter anti-addiction rules took effect in 2021, the gaming industry has relied on time and spending limits. But families have found workarounds—kids using parents' accounts, or finding ways around facial recognition checks. Tencent's new approach aims to close those loopholes.

Inside the game: AI patrols and smarter verification
The new "AI Patrol" feature continuously monitors player behavior in real time. An "AI Guardian" dynamically classifies risk levels based on gameplay patterns. Beyond standard facial recognition, it now uses multi-modal verification including voiceprint analysis, age estimation, and detection of bypass attempts. This creates a full chain of intervention—from early warnings to stepped-up verification—making it much harder for minors to slip through.

Outside the game: AI-powered parental controls
Tencent's Growth Guardian platform has been upgraded with an AI conversation interface, integrating Tencent HuanYuan and DeepSeek large models. Parents can now manage their child's gaming through natural language—just ask the AI to check accounts, set no-play periods, or initiate facial recognition. The AI identifies the parent's intent, guides them step by step, and proactively suggests solutions when it detects problems. Tasks that once felt too complicated are now simple conversations.

This isn't Tencent's first foray into AI for gaming. The company has previously used AI for game development and player experience enhancements. But applying it to minor protection marks a significant expansion.
Still, technology alone isn't enough. Tencent has also been promoting a "prevention with guidance" approach, offering teenagers alternatives through projects like Future Classroom, Future Music Workshop, and the sports app "Eagle Companion Sports."
Summer is when kids have more free time—and more chances to game. For protections to truly work, companies need to keep improving their tech, and parents need to stay engaged. Only then can we build a real safety net for young people.
