Tencent Boosts AI Team with Tsinghua Star Peng Tianyu
Tencent Adds Machine Learning Prodigy to AI Team
Tencent has scored another major win in the intensifying AI talent wars. Peng Tianyu, a 31-year-old machine learning expert fresh from Singapore's Sea AI Lab, is joining the Chinese tech giant's Tongyi large model team next month.

From Tsinghua Whiz Kid to Industry Leader
Peng's academic pedigree reads like an elite scholar's dream resume. Admitted to Tsinghua University while still in high school, he earned his PhD under renowned professor Zhu Jun in 2022. During his doctoral studies, Peng published over 70 papers at top-tier conferences like ICML and NeurIPS - racking up an impressive 15,000 citations.
"Peng represents exactly the caliber of talent we're bringing into our AI initiatives," said a Tencent spokesperson. "His work on machine learning robustness bridges academic rigor with practical applications."
The young researcher comes decorated with honors including Microsoft and Baidu scholarships, plus NVIDIA's Academic Pioneer Award. After graduation, he cut his teeth at Sea AI Lab focusing on trustworthy machine learning systems.
Multi-Modal Mission Ahead
At Tencent, Peng will helm research into multi-modal reinforcement learning - teaching AI systems to process and connect different types of data like text, images and audio.
The appointment follows December's high-profile hiring of ex-OpenAI researcher Yao Shunyu as Chief AI Scientist. Together, these recruits form part of CEO Ma Huateng's "deep restructuring" strategy for Tongyi.
The moves appear timely. Just days before Peng's announcement, Tencent open-sourced version 3.0 of its Tongyi Image model - now ranking among global leaders in image editing benchmarks.

- Top Talent Grab: Peng Tianyu becomes latest elite recruit for Tencent's Tongyi team
- Academic Pedigree: Tsinghua PhD with 70+ publications joins from Sea AI Lab
- Research Focus: Will lead cutting-edge work on multi-modal reinforcement learning
