Slack has unveiled ambitious plans to revolutionize its core Slackbot functionality, transitioning from simple reminders to a comprehensive AI-powered work assistant. The upgrade, confirmed by Slack's Chief Product Officer Rob Seaman in an interview with The Verge, represents one of the most significant platform enhancements since Salesforce acquired the company.

Enhanced Capabilities

The new AI Slackbot will offer:

  • Custom Planning: Generates tailored daily or project plans using workspace data
  • Advanced Information Processing: Filters and summarizes messages across multiple channels
  • Complex Task Management: Coordinates product launches and marketing campaigns
  • Natural Language Search: Finds documents using conversational queries
  • Cross-Platform Integration: Syncs with Outlook and Google Calendar for scheduling

The upgraded interface features:

  • A dedicated AI icon next to the search bar
  • A DM-style panel for natural language queries like "What are today's priorities?"
  • Preservation of existing Slackbot functions alongside new features

The development builds on Slack's existing AI capabilities including discussion summaries and company jargon interpretation.

Data Security Measures

Slack emphasized robust privacy protections:

  • Operations run on Amazon Web Services' virtual private cloud
  • Strict firewall protection ensures no data leaves company networks
  • Corporate administrators can opt out entirely

The system has already undergone testing with 70,000 Salesforce employees and select customers ahead of its planned year-end public release.
