Siri Might Soon Let You Swap Brains

Imagine asking Siri to create a reminder, but instead of Apple's assistant, Claude does the thinking. That's not sci-fi—it's a possibility hidden in Apple's latest code. Developer "pdfu" dug into iOS 27 and macOS Golden Gate and found something surprising: Apple has built a new Siri AI architecture that can play nice with outside AI models.

Two Ways to Hand Over the Wheel

Model Delegation works like this: Claude shows up as a Siri extension, much like ChatGPT does today. You pull up the "Search or Ask" bar, pick Claude from the "Ask…" menu, and suddenly Claude is handling your request. But here's the catch—if the task involves Apple's own apps, like Reminders, Claude parses your words and then hands the job back to Siri to actually create the reminder. In another demo, Claude successfully made a CSV file inside Siri's chat window, something Siri alone can't do. So Claude can fill in the gaps, but Siri still runs the show for system stuff.

Inference Provider goes further. This protocol, part of the "Model Management Service," lets you completely replace Siri's on-device brain with something like GPT-5.6. In this mode, ChatGPT takes over Siri's planner and tool definitions. It can request system operations, receive your personal data, and generate responses that Siri then presents through its own interface and voice. In one demo, a user asked ChatGPT to find specific emails in the Siri app, summarize them and any to-do items, then send a message to a contact via Messages. The logs showed up on OpenAI's platform. That's a full takeover.

Why Now? The EU Might Be Pushing

Most media think the EU's Digital Markets Act (DMA) is the nudge. The DMA requires Apple to give third parties access to iOS hardware and software features that match Apple's own services. The European Commission has made it clear this applies to Siri AI too. So Apple might be prepping for a future where it has no choice but to open up.

But Don't Hold Your Breath

Right now, the "Ask…" feature only works with the ChatGPT extension in the macOS 27 Golden Gate candidate release. Claude isn't available yet. Apple hasn't opened model delegation to third parties, and users can't see this feature. Still, the code shows Apple has done serious engineering work for model interoperability. It's like finding blueprints for a door that hasn't been installed yet.
